Volume 6 Issue 7 April 2000
Serving the needs of the hungry through leftover food pickup and sharing.
Happy Spring!
We welcome the Allman Brothers Band, Tina Turner, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and No Doubt, joining us again to fight hunger. Crosby Still, Nash and Young’s caterer ‘Dega Catering’ would like to donate all edible leftovers from their shows. We do not have a letter from them. The caterers, Andy and Peggy will work with you. Please call me if you will do the pickup in your city. We are launching our new logo this month and will be placing it on all of our literature and eventually everything we use. (Enclosure)
Much thanks to Scott Wadler and his staff from MTV for their generosity, time, and brilliance to create this wonderful piece. There will be a Logo Launch Party in NYC on Friday, April 7 at 530p.m.. If you are interested in coming, please rsvp to NY Regional Director Rachel Bayne at 1-917-282-8905. All of our volunteers and friends are invited. By now, many of you have heard that our organization was highlighted on the CBS segment, The American Dream. Noted CBS newsman Dan Rather presented Rock and Wrap It Up! on his nightly national broadcast, the CBS Evening News on Thursday 3/2/00. (Enclosure) The segment was also aired on many local television affiliates nationwide and on all the CBS radio stations. The radio broadcast was heard on three successive days. The market audience for both television and radio was estimated at 60 million Americans. This piece should help many of you continue to build relationships with the arenas and promoters who have helped in the past. We continue to get inquires about RWU from the segment on FoodTV which aired 4 times at the end of February.

Do’s and Don’t’s of Backstage Behavior
* Safety of transferring the food collected is paramount. Take the food as soon as possible to your area of need. You are not there to watch the show.
* Always come prepared to wrap with either gallon zip locks bags and green liners. Many people use a basket with handles to carry out the trays of leftovers. Some use a hand cart. (Many use a luggage cart and basket with handles.
* Never take more than one person with you to the backstage area. Another can wait in the vehicle.
* Never take cameras, ask for autographs, or make contact with the performers.
* Always wear your Rock and Wrap it Up! tee shirt and laminate. (we will supply as needed)
* Always fill out a receipt and mail or fax after the pickup. The form can be reproduced from our website. The sooner after the pickup this is done, the less chance you will forget to do it.
* Speak to the caterer the day of the event to see what is the best time and if things have changed ie: a buyout in that city where there might be no catering. We can supply you with contact numbers for every arena.
* Always smile and get to know the backstage security. Most will not know you or about us because they change guards frequently. Give out our goals and objectives sheet. Mention our recent national exposure on the Food Channel and CBS Nightly News with Dan Rather, The American Dream segment.
* Write thank you letters or letters of introduction to people you deal with, especially the management of the arenas and the caterers.
* Your safety is important. Make sure to wear good walking shoes. Many times the areas are poorly lit. Don’t do the pickup if you have tickets for the show.
* Alway act as if you will need to be backstage every night.
* Leave copies of our newsletter where applicable.
* Be very proud! You represent a worldwide hunger relief organization which feeds millions of people yearly. Your actions reflect all of us.
* Any questions, please call 1-516-295-0670 or 1-877-691-FOOD
