NEW YORK, NY - May 20, 2002 -- Rock and Wrap It Up! -- an international volunteer food recovery service and think tank aiding in the fight to alleviate hunger in the United States and around the world - will hold its second annual benefit on Monday, June 24th from 7PM to 11PM at Pier Sixty in New York City.
This year's honorees include Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne, who will receive the Lena and Joseph Mandelbaum Humanitarian Award, Syndicated Columnist Liz Smith, who will receive the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Award, and Michael LoMonaco, Executive Chef of the former Windows on the World restaurant, who will receive a newly created Jay Magazine Award of Excellence.
Joining with Rock and Wrap It UP! In October 1995, Ozzy was one of it's earliest supporters. In 1996, Ozzy Osbourne was the first star to record public service announcement to help Rock and Wrap it Up further it's goal of feeding all who hunger. In 1998, Sharon and daughter Kelly were interviewed for a video produced from a United States Department of Agriculture grant to help grow the Rock and Wrap it Up School Program. They have also been financial contributors.
A longtime supporter of Rock and Wrap it Up! Liz has selflessly dedicated much of her time and resources to charitable works, and shares in our vision of growing Rock and Wrap It Up! into an even greater force in the fight against hunger.
Chef Michael LoMonaco will receive the first Jay Magazine Award for his efforts to end hunger. LoMonaco was the Chef at Windows on the World and worked closely with Jay Magazine, who was Director of Catering at Windows on the World, and was among those who perished on September 11th. This award is Rock and Wrap It Up's way of honoring his memory.
The Mandelbaum Award is named in honor of Rock and Wrap It Up! Founder's parents, both of whom survived concentration camps in Nazi Germany. Surviving against all odds and an environment where starvation and malnutrition were the norm, Lena and Joseph Mandelbaum met in a German displaced person's camp, married and then immigrated to the United States.
The Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Award was made possible by the vision of the Late Bill Emerson, United States Congressman. The Honorable Bill Emerson wanted a means that many more hungry could be fed in this country. He wrote and helped push through what would become known as the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Act. Enacted after his death by President Bill Clinton in November 1996, this law stands as the cornerstone for all perishable food organizations foundation. The passage and implementation of this continues to feed millions more hungry each year.
The organization's main goal is to have bands incorporate a rider into their contract that indicates their request for all edible leftover food to go to local soup kitchen or shelter. Rock and Wrap it Up! then arranges for the removal. The organization also works with existing local perishable food programs, such as USA Harvest, food collection and rescue services. Current tours contracting food recovery with Rock and Wrap it Up! in their rider include Usher, Linkin Park, Ozzy Osbourne, Brooks and Dunn, Elton John and Britney Spears.
Rock and Wrap It Up was founded by Syd Mandelbaum to honor his parents' survival from Nazi concentration camps. As a scientist, he is best known for heading the American team that did the DNA Genetic Sequencing of Anna Anderson's hair disproving the relationship to the Czar and Czarina Romanov, Mandelbaum was a DNA Consultant at the Harvard Medical School Center for Blood Research Laboratory in genetics testing and also founded the first DNA roundtable seminar series, New York and Boston, 1989 to help police departments better use DNA in prosecuting rape and murder cases. He help introduce homerun measurement to Major League baseball in 1991. To stop future holocausts, in 1981, Mandelbaum started the video-taping of Holocaust survivors and camp liberators.
Since September 11, 2001, the organization has also been food and resources to World Trade Center recovery projects.
Rock and Wrap It Up! Has more than 4,000 volunteers covering 500 cities. Since its creation in 1994, more than 4,000,000 pounds of food have been picked up, feeding more than 12,000,000 people.
