Rock and Wrap It Up! is a global think tank working to reduce poverty. Using greening tactics, they recover food and other assets to be given to agencies fighting poverty, increasing their operating budgets. This allows the agencies to hire more service providers such as tutors, social workers, job placement counselors and mental health counselors to attack the root cause of poverty. Rock and Wrap It Up! recovers food and other assets in Sports, Music, Schools, Film, T.V., Hospitals and Hotels. Rock and Wrap It Up! helped to write and implement the Federal Food Donation Act of 2008, which encourages all Federal buildings to feed the hungry and keep food out of landfills. Hungerpedia.com, launched in 2011 is a web encyclopedia that enables potential donors to find suitable anti-poverty agencies across North America. Rock and Wrap It Up! has launched The Whole Earth Calculator. This mobile app quantifies and tweets food recovery statistics sensitizing social and environmental efforts to the public.

Attention Girl Scouts: Join with the Girl Scouts of Suffolk, NY to help at-risk teens and women through Hannah’s Project.

-Collect boxes of tampons and panty liners
-So many girls are unable to purchase these necessary items
-They are not covered by food stamps

Encourage everyone to by a second box each month and donate.

Your Girl Scout Troop can make the difference in a girl’s life.

Hannah’s Project is the RWU initiative as part of our Mardi Bra efforts to help give indigent girls and women dignity by donating to them feminine hygiene products.  We ask that you purchase one extra box when you buy for yourself. We would suggest that collection boxes be placed in secure areas in your school or building.

Ten tons of food recovered from 2016 PGA Championship

The 2016 PGA Championship is the 98th PGA Championship which was held at The Baltusrol Golf Club on the Lower Course in Springfield Township, New Jersey from July 28th to July 31st 2016. This is the ninth major and second PGA Championship at Baltusrol, which last hosted in 2005. First time PGA Championship winner Jimmy Walker won with -14, besting Jason Day by one stroke.

This year, for the first time, the PGA and Levy Restaurants partnered with Rock and Wrap It Up! (RWU) to ensure that all food prepared but not served, as well as extra perishable foods, were donated to feed the hungry of New Jersey. These donations were received by The Market Street Mission and the Community Food Bank of New Jersey. RWU has worked with the PGA since 2011 arranging food recovery from various matches throughout the United States.

The total food recovered from the Baltusrol PGA Golf Championship was approximately 20,000 pounds. Using the RWU Whole Earth Calculator™, this equaled 16,667 USDA sanctioned meal equivalents were donated and over 10,860 pounds of CO2e were saved from entering the atmosphere by avoiding a landfill. Through the partnership of the PGA and RWU, both poverty and carbon footprints were lowered.

What is Feed The Veterans?

We are a 501(c)(3) charity dedicated to reducing poverty. We have developed databases of programs across the United States that feed the hungry. We work with veteran agencies such as the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars to connect these services with caregivers and information providers who work with veterans and their families. Download our database, Hungerpedia from out website, www.rockandwrapitup.org We have developed downloadable mobile apps that list these food providers. Our Whole Earth Calculator (WEC) also converts pounds of food donated to us into GHG reduction statistics and USDA sanctioned meal equivalents. Users can share these numbers across social media. Support your State Food Donation Act in 2017 to get more food to the needy and hungry veterans and reduce Green House Gas emissions from landfills.

Who and where are hungry and homeless veterans?

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) states that the nation’s homeless veterans are predominantly male, with roughly 9% being female. About 11% of the adult homeless population are veterans… Roughly 45% of all homeless veterans are African American or Hispanic, despite only accounting for 10.4% and 3.4% of the U.S. veteran population, respectively, according to the National

Homeless veterans are younger on average than the total veteran population. Approximately 9% are between the ages of 18 and 30, and 41% are between the ages of 31 and 50. Conversely, only 5% of all veterans are between the ages of 18 and 30, and less than 23% are between 31 and 50.

America’s homeless veterans have served in World War II, the Korean War, Cold War, Vietnam War, Grenada, Panama, Lebanon, Persian Gulf War, Afghanistan and Iraq (OEF/OIF), and the military’s anti-drug cultivation efforts in South America. Nearly half of homeless veterans served during the Vietnam era. Two-thirds served our country for at least three years, and one-third were stationed in a war zone. About 1.4 million other veterans, meanwhile, are considered at risk of homelessness due to poverty, lack of support networks, and dismal living conditions in overcrowded or substandard housing.” -Nation Coalition of Homeless Veterans

Veterans are disproportionately homeless

More than 67,000 homeless veterans were counted on a given January night in America last year. More than 4 in 10 homeless veterans were found unsheltered.

Almost half of homeless veterans were African American in 2008 despite the fact that only 11 percent of veterans overall are African American.

1.5 million veterans are at risk of homelessness due to poverty, lack of support networks, and dismal living conditions in overcrowded or substandard housing.

Many veterans have trouble finding good jobs

30.2 percent of veterans ages 18 to 24 were unemployed according to unpublished 2011 Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

Nearly 1 in 10 veterans with disabilities were not employed in 2010.

According to Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, a 2007 survey showed that more than one-third of employers were unaware of protections they must provide to service members, and more than half spent less than 2 percent of their recruitment budget on military advertising and/or did not understand the qualifications of military service.

In that same survey more than half of all veterans were unsure of how to professionally network, and nearly three in four felt unprepared to negotiate salary and benefits and/or unable to effectively translate military skills.

Five Tons of Food Recovered From MLB All Star Game

Rock and Wrap It Up! (RWU) and Major League Baseball (MLB) are celebrating their 10th year working together to recover food from the stadium and events surrounding the All Star Game presented by MasterCard. Food prepared but not served or sold is being recovered by Rock and Wrap it Up! and local agencies. RWU vets local agencies in each city, assuring that they have health certificates, transportation, and a large enough program to use the bounty.

Since 2007, through 2016, over 36,000 pounds of food have been recovered. Using the RWU Whole Earth Calculator (TM) mobile app, the recoveries translate to 30,000 USDA meal equivalents and using the newest EPA formulas, over 19,548pounds of CO2e reduction.

Major League Baseball has been in the forefront encouraging greening of stadiums in both construction and resource implementation. “It is win-win says Tom Brasuell, Vice-President of Community Affairs for MLB. Rock and Wrap it Up! already works with 24 of our franchises, recovering food from their stadiums after each home game.” MLB reached out to RWU after hearing about their work with the Detroit Tigers, the first team to develop a Sports Wrap! program in 2003. “ We were blessed to be contacted by Tiger Pitcher Mike Maroth and his wife Brooke in 2002” said CEO and Founder Syd Mandelbaum.“ Mike noticed food left in the clubhouse and wanted to feed Detroit s hungry. We worked together to make it happen. We now have 75 teams and stadiums throughout North America donating after each game.”
