Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act
The Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act was signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1996. It provides a uniform standard which donors of food can follow in good faith to protect themselves from liability. The foodstuffs covered include raw, processed or prepared edible substances, ice, beverages or ingredients and non food grocery items such as cleaning products, paper plates, etc. Except for gross negligence, donors and nonprofit programs are protected from civil and criminal liability arising from the nature, age, packaging or condition of apparently wholesome groceries.
