Flash! Presidents' Summit a success for RWU!
We welcome The Indigo Girls and thank The Allman Brothers Band for rejoining us. We had a busy month. The United States Department of Agriculture's Joel Berg invited us to conduct a joint press conference at the Presidents' Summit in Philadelphia on Sunday April 27th. On the floor of the convention center, we talked about our work, highlighting our new Rock and Wrap it Up! School Program. USDA Secretary Dan Glickman spoke about the national commitment to end hunger through gleaning, with Rock and Wrap it Up!, Foodchain and the National Collaboration of Youth (Boys and Girls Scouts, etc.) as the agencies they will work with. I thank Linda Daniggelis, Lloyd Gold, Kathie and Nick Stamou, Linda Riddell and my wife Diane for attending the conference on short notice. Michael Bolton was one of the performers and has been with WRU for three tours. He invited us backstage where we met with him; he further committed time and energy to help us. We also met with either management or the performer; Oprah Winfrey, All 4 One, Tony Robbins, Tony Bennett, LL Cool J, Patti LaBelle, Jon Secada and Sinbad. We will try to sign on many of these acts. We also met motivator and lecturer Tony Robbins.The School Program was launched, with the leadership of Linda Daniggelis. George Hewlett High School in Long Island, NY set up the first program nationally. Debrah Galimidi, an 18 year old senior who had picked up food at Jones Beach as a volunteer last summer, piloted the project. She spoke to her school principal, school lunch coordinator and a local soup kitchen. (enclosures). We ask that all programs that are set up first try to use existing perishable food program pickup agencies. Foodchain 1-800-845-3008 can help identify many agencies. School Lunch coordinator at Hewlett HS, Emily Rein, can be reached at 1-516-374-8000 with specific questions regarding federal regulations and administrative reporting. Linda Daniggelis, 1-516-221-3559, received over 200 e-mails from the May issue of YM article and 50+ school programs can potentially be launched from the inquires. I have shirts available. Please call up with your requests. We thank Bill Silva Presents of San Diego for his generosity. Liz Vinas, our regional director from San Diego arranged with Bill Silva to attend every show his organization promotes and pickup food to feed the hungry of San Diego. We thank Ron Delsener and Mitch Slater for their support and allowing RWU to pickup leftovers for the seventh year at Jones Beach Amphitheater. We welcome new Regional Directors Mandy May, Amarillo TX, Auguste Goldman, San Francisco CA, Mark Ellis, Portland OR, Jonathan Hand and Mark Anderson, Birmingham AL, Caresse Santana and Jennifer Miller, Orange CA, and Sunny Schaeffer, St. Louis MO. We welcome new volunteers Debbie Pollack, Houston TX, Linda Riddell, Ithica NY, and Kristen Cordoza, Indianapolis IN. Meetings were held this month with UNICEF in New York to expand our international work. We thank Brenda Camarillo, Linda Riddell, Adele Goldberg and Kathy Traystman for their efforts to develop a strong financial foundation for our organization.
